The Creative Intelligence Counseling Philosophy

I believe that highly creative individuals benefit from counseling that is uniquely tailored to their specific abilities and needs. This includes careful assessment and access to significant processing and coping skills. Cognitive and behavioral methods alone often fail with highly creative individuals because they typically experience their emotions deeply and are highly aware of subconscious processes. While cognitive and behavioral methods have validity in their own right, when used by themselves they often do not assist the highly creative person to work through their feelings and issues on a level that feels deep enough for them.

Since most highly creative individuals have difficulty “tuning things out” by virtue of their perceptiveness, they often need to move “through” their feelings directly rather than simply “manage around” them.

Traditional psychodynamic therapy is blended with the use of the creative process to effect transformation. EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), guided imagery, mindfulness-based stress reduction and creative problem-solving skills are additional tools employed. Problems and symptoms are seen as vehicles for self-transformation where, within the act of working through a problem, one often discovers capabilities previously unknown.

Treatment makes it possible to bring one’s creativity into the world in ways that may not have been possible before. Through this process, one's vocational direction often becomes clear if not previously known. The ability to live from one’s deepest vocation is not only satisfying in its own right, but often allows for a deeper level of emotional healing to take place.

“Glory is not found in golden prizes or gratified egos, but in the silent conquest of oneself.”
